Blepharoplasty
(Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery )

Dr. Steinman has performed Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery since 1987 using both laser and surgical techniques.  All procedures are safely performed using local anesthesia in Dr. Steinman's surgical facilities.

The eyes are a vital feature of a person's face and are often the first area to show signs of aging.  Drooping and wrinkling of the eyelids and bags under the eyes usually begin in people in their thirties, forties and fifties and are a natural part of the aging process.

For many otherwise young and energetic people, these changes make them look tired and strained.  Some patients vision is also compromised by eyelid drooping.  Eyelid Cosmetic Surgery can open the eyes and smooth out eyelid contours, creating a much more youthful and energetic appearance.

Upper Eyelids

For the upper eyelids, small incisions are made in the eyelid skin.  This allows Dr. Steinman to remove excess skin and muscle that have stretched over time, causing drooping and wrinkling.  He then carefully removes excess eyelids fat to eliminate the fullness and bulging that often has occurred.  Very fine, dissolving sutures are then used to repair and reshape the upper lid.  When needed, laser resurfacing is used to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles.

Lower Eyelids

Dr. Steinman uses several different techniques to rejuvenate the low eyelids.  Patients with only fine lines and wrinkles of the eyelids and crow's feet areas may need only a light laser peel to rejuvenate their appearance.

Patients with bulging of the lower eyelids are often treated using a " transconjunctival approach ."  In this technique, a small incision is made inside the lower eyelid, allowing Dr. Steinman to carefully remove the eyelid fat causing the bulges with no visible incisions or scars.

Patients with significant extra skin and muscle require Dr. Steinman to perform an "direct approach."  A small incision is made just below the eyelashes, allowing him to trim away excess skin and muscle, before removing excessive eyelid fat. The incision is then closed with dissolving sutures, resulting in a nearly invisible scar hidden in a natural eyelid crease.

Is the procedure painful?
Surprisingly, both the procedure and the healing phase are not considered painful by the vast majority of Dr. Steinman's patients.  Dr. Steinman gives his patients medications to relax them before administering any local anesthesia.  The vast majority of patients are surprised at how little they feel.  Mild postoperative pain medication almost always eliminates any discomfort felt in the first few days after the surgery.

When will I be able to return to work?
All patients experience bruising after eyelid cosmetic surgery.  Most patients are able to return to work five to seven days after eyelid laser surgery or blepharoplasty surgery.

Dr. Steinman also provides his patients with free, custom matched camouflage makeup .  This allows them to return to work in one week or less after their procedure.

Are there any possible complications?
Almost all patients will experience some bruising, which lasts for one or two weeks.  Thousands of eyelid tucks are performed each year, and significant complications are very rare.  Mild eyelid asymmetry, scarring, skin color change, and infection are rare side-effects.  These side effects can almost always be controlled with medications and treatments.
